Puppy Socialization
Ways to socialize your puppy correctly during the critical 3-14 week period.
Socialization is your puppy getting to know the world without fear. Steps taken in the critical 3-14 week period shape its adult character.
The Critical Period
Roughly 3-14 weeks is when a puppy is most open to new experiences. Positive experiences in this window build lifelong confidence.
Gradual and Positive
Arrange controlled, positive introductions to different people, sounds, surfaces and (if fully vaccinated) dogs. Never force; pair with rewards.
Don't Overdo It
Too much stimulation can overwhelm a puppy. Keep sessions short and positive; back off at any sign of fear.
Socialization Tips
- Pair every new experience with a reward
- Don't force when scared, give space
- Walk on different surfaces
- Introduce to safe dogs with vet approval
