Dog Crate Training
Positive crate training steps that turn the crate into your dog's safe den.
Done right, crate training gives your dog its own safe den; it helps with potty training and being alone. The key: never use the crate as punishment.
Make the Crate Positive
Keep the door open, put a soft bed and treats inside. Let the dog enter on its own. Reward calmly when it goes in.
Increase Time Gradually
First close the door for seconds, then extend gradually. Increase duration as the dog stays calm; step back if it panics.
Never Use as Punishment
The crate should be a refuge, not a prison. Using it for punishment breaks trust and creates anxiety.
Crate Training Tips
- Size the crate appropriately for the dog
- Pair with a puzzle/frozen toy
- Guide to the crate when tired
- Place it near you at night (at first)
