Teaching Your Dog to "Stay"
Steps to teach the stay command, which is critical for safety.
The "stay" command keeps your dog in place; it can save its life at doorways or in traffic. It requires patience and gradual progress.
Short Distance and Duration
With the dog sitting, say "stay", take one step back and return immediately, then reward. Start with very short duration and distance.
Increase Three Variables Separately
Increase duration, distance and distractions one at a time, not together. If the dog fails, take a step back.
A Release Word
Choose a release word like "okay/free". Teach the dog to move only on that word.
Stay Command Tips
- Reduce difficulty on failure
- Use a release word
- Work in short sessions
- Apply in real life (door, food)
