Why Do Dogs Bite?
1. Teething and play
Puppies teethe at 3-6 months and bite to soothe itchy gums. Mouthing during play is also natural.
2. Lack of bite inhibition
Puppies separated too early from mom and littermates miss the "how hard is too hard" lesson.
3. Fear / defense
A cornered, hurting or threatened dog may bite defensively.
4. Resource guarding
The instinct to guard food, toys or bed.
How to Stop Biting
Bite inhibition exercise
- When your dog bites your hand, say a loud "Ow!" and pause play for 10-20 seconds
- Resume with a toy once calm
- This teaches "biting hard ends the fun"
Redirection
- Offer an appropriate chew toy (instead of hands/feet)
- Chilled toys soothe during teething
Energy and mental stimulation
A tired dog bites less: daily exercise + sniffing/puzzle games.
What NOT to Do
- Holding the mouth / hitting the nose: creates fear and defensive aggression.
- Rough hand play: teaches your dog that hands are toys.
- Yelling and chasing: the dog thinks it is a game.
- Punishing fear biting: makes it worse; if fear is the cause, build trust.
