Teaching Your Dog to "Drop It"
The drop-it command that gets a dangerous object out of its mouth.
The "drop it" command gets your dog to release something (possibly dangerous) from its mouth. Taught correctly, it is invaluable for safety.
The Trade Logic
Offer a more valuable reward in exchange for the toy in its mouth. Say "drop it", and reward when it drops. Make dropping pay off.
Never Force It Out
Forcing it out of the mouth increases resource guarding. The trade method preserves trust and teaches voluntary dropping.
Gradual Difficulty
Start with low-value objects and gradually move to items the dog wants more.
Drop It Tips
- Always offer a valuable trade
- Don't pull or chase
- Give a calm, clear cue
- Reward generously when it drops
