Teaching Your Dog to "Lie Down"
Teaching the down command step by step after sit.
The "down" command is a basic obedience skill that helps your dog settle and wait for longer. It is easy to teach for dogs that already know sit.
Start From Sit
With the dog sitting, slowly lower the treat from its nose toward the floor. As the dog follows the treat, it naturally lies down.
Mark and Reward
The moment its elbows touch the floor, say "good" and give the treat. After a few reps, add the "Down" cue.
Extend Duration
Gradually increase the wait before it gets up. Reinforce with rewards as it stays calm.
Down Command Tips
- Practice on a soft surface
- Don't pull the treat too fast
- Say the cue only once
- Repeat in different settings
