Puppy Training

The foundations built in the first 4 months last a lifetime

Adopting a puppy is the beginning of a bond that will last a lifetime. The first 4 months (8-16 weeks) are scientifically known as the "critical socialization period" — the experiences gained during this time shape the dog's adult character. Starting right is far easier than dealing with behavioral problems later.

The First Week: Settling Into the Home

A puppy experiences stress when it arrives at its new home. A calm structure during the first week is critical:

  • A space of its own: Bed, water bowl, toy — a fixed spot
  • Routine: Food, play and sleep at the same times
  • Avoid overstimulation: Limit visitors, plenty of sleep (16-20 hours/day)
  • Name recognition: Reward the puppy when you say its name
  • Potty routine: Take it to the potty area within 5 minutes after food, water, play and sleep

Socialization (8-16 Weeks) - The Critical Period

During this period the puppy's brain encodes new experiences as "normal." Insufficient socialization creates fear/aggression in adulthood.

Socialization Checklist:

  • 10+ different people (variety of age, gender, appearance)
  • 5+ different environments (park, cafe, bus stop, store)
  • Various sounds (doorbell, blender, phone, thunder recording)
  • Different surfaces (grass, concrete, carpet, gravel, parquet)
  • Other dogs (only fully vaccinated, healthy ones)
  • Children (under parental supervision, gentle)
  • Vet visit (a positive experience — with treats)

WARNING: No contact with soil/parks until the vaccination schedule is complete. But carrying the puppy around and introductions at home should still be done.

Potty Training (7-Day Plan)

A puppy can learn regular potty control at 8-12 weeks.

  1. Days 1-2: A regular potty area (outside or a pad). Take it there within 5 minutes after food, water, play and sleep.
  2. Days 3-4: Add the "potty" command. Reward and praise immediately when it goes.
  3. Days 5-6: Extend the intervals (every 2-3 hours). Clean up indoor accidents calmly.
  4. Day 7+: The dog shows you "when it needs to go" (approaching the door, pacing). Follow this signal.

Never punish: Methods like rubbing its nose create fear in the dog and set training back.

Crate Training

Crate training gives a puppy a safe space, structure at home, and practice being alone.

Choosing the right crate:

  • The dog should be able to stand and turn around
  • Choose it based on the adult size (use a divider while it grows)
  • It should contain a bed + water bowl + one toy

Training steps:

  1. Day one: Leave the door open, place a treat inside the crate. Praise the puppy when it enters.
  2. Days 2-3: Close the door for 1-2 minutes while the puppy is inside.
  3. Days 4-7: Gradually increase the time (5 min → 15 min → 30 min).
  4. Week 2: Leave the house and try 30 minutes to 1 hour.
  5. Week 3+: A 4-hour upper limit (puppies cannot hold their urine for more than 4 hours).

Step-by-Step Guide

  1. 1

Adopt at no earlier than 8 weeks

Separating too early from the mother and littermates causes socialization problems.

  2. 2

A calm first week of settling in

Avoid overstimulation, establish a routine, give it a space of its own.

  3. 3

Start potty training on day one

Take it to the potty area within 5 minutes after food, water and sleep.

  4. 4

    Intensive socialization at 8-16 weeks

Controlled introductions to different people, environments, sounds and surfaces.

  5. 5

    Follow the vaccination schedule

Vaccinations at weeks 6, 8, 12 and 16 under veterinary supervision.

  6. 6

Start basic commands at week 12

Name, sit, come — 5 minutes a day, with food rewards.

  7. 7

    Start crate training early

A core tool for a safe space and learning to be alone.

Frequently Asked Questions

When can I bring a puppy home?

After it is at least 8 weeks old. Before this age it cannot complete the social rules it needs to learn from its mother and littermates.

What should I do if the puppy cries on the first night?

It is normal. It no longer has its former family and home, so it is scared. Place its bed nearby, a mildly warm bottle (the mother's warmth), a ticking clock (the mother's heartbeat). Do not rush over the moment it cries — that creates dependence.

How many hours a day should a puppy sleep?

16-20 hours. Puppies that sleep too little become cranky and destructive. Encourage it to rest in its own space to calm down.

Can I take it outside before its vaccinations are complete?

No contact with soil and other dogs (risk of parvovirus). But carrying it around, sitting on the balcony, and introducing guests at home are essential. The socialization period (3-14 weeks) must not be missed.

My puppy bites my hand, is that normal?

Teething (3-6 months) is natural. Say "ouch" and pull your hand away, then redirect it to a chew toy. Never shout or punish — that triggers aggression.

When does a puppy learn basic commands?

You can start with short sessions around 12-16 weeks. Its attention span is short (3-5 minutes), so frequent repetition is needed. Positive reinforcement plus food rewards is the most effective method.
