How to Trim Dog Nails
Ways to trim your dog's nails safely and stress-free.
Overgrown nails cause pain and affect your dog's gait. With the right technique and patience, nail trimming can be done safely at home.
Find the Quick
The pink vein inside the nail (the quick) must not be cut. It is visible in light nails; on dark nails, trim little by little.
Introduce Gradually
First pair touching the paw, then the clipper, with rewards. You don't have to trim all nails in one session.
The Right Gear
Use a dog-appropriate clipper or grinder. Keep styptic powder on hand for bleeding.
Nail Trimming Tips
- Trim little but often
- Don't cut the quick
- Create a positive experience with rewards
- See a vet/groomer if unsure
