Choosing the Right Reward in Dog Training
Reward types that boost motivation and how to use them.
The reward is the engine of positive reinforcement. Giving the right reward at the right moment determines training speed and durability.
Reward Hierarchy
Every dog has different motivation. Kibble, wet treats, toys, praise... Save "high-value" rewards for hard tasks.
Timing and Size
The reward should come right after the correct behavior and in small pieces. A late reward can reinforce the wrong behavior.
Gradual Fading
Once the behavior is solid, don't reward every time; reinforce occasionally and with praise. This avoids reward dependence.
Reward Tips
- Save high-value rewards for hard tasks
- Reward immediately
- Use small pieces
- Fade gradually over time
