Before You Start
- Choose a calm, low-distraction setting
- Prepare small, high-value food rewards
- Keep sessions short (5-10 min), don't tire the dog
- Train when the dog is hungry/eager
Step-by-Step Sit Training
Luring with food
- Bring the treat close to the dog's nose
- Slowly move it up and back over its head
- As the head rises, the rear naturally lowers to the floor
- The moment the bottom touches, say "yes/good" and give the treat
Add the cue
Once the motion is reliable, say "Sit" just before it sits. Repeat so it pairs the word with the action.
Fade the reward
Over time don't reward every single time; reinforce with praise and occasional treats.
Common Mistakes
- Raising the treat too high and making the dog jump
- Repeating the cue over and over ("sit sit sit")
- Rewarding before the bottom touches the floor
- Long, boring sessions
- Pushing the dog down by hand
