Why Do Dogs Jump Up?
Attention seeking
When it jumps, even being looked at, talked to or pushed away counts as rewarding "attention".
Excitement
Built-up excitement at homecomings or guest arrivals turns into jumping.
Learned habit
Cute puppy jumping gets unintentionally reinforced.
How to Stop Jumping
Withdraw attention
- When the dog jumps, turn away, break eye contact, stay silent
- When all four paws are down, calmly praise + reward
- This teaches "staying calm gets attention"
Teach an alternative
Reinforce "sit" for greetings; a sitting dog cannot jump.
Guest scenario
Manage the dog on a leash when guests arrive, sit + reward; allow greeting only when calm.
Consistency Is Key
- Everyone in the family must apply the same rule
- Allowing it sometimes and forbidding it other times makes it worse
- In high-energy moments, wait for calm first
- Never turn jumping into a "game" by pushing/yelling
